Clear Water, Day and Night.
No Smell in the Water.

Aquarium keepers settled this decades ago. A tank stays clear because the water keeps passing under ultraviolet light. We moved the same method into a pet fountain: 18 hours of UVC a day, a tank with no dead corners, and no silicone tubing anywhere in the path. Biofilm never gets established, so the water never turns, and the cat is willing to make the walk.

The problem

It washes off.
It grows back.

The rim of the bowl, the inside of the spout, the seam around the pump. Rinsing does not shift it. You have to work at it with your fingertips, and afterwards your fingers still feel slippery. A few days later it is back.

Biofilm is a layer bacteria build for themselves: they settle on a wet surface and secrete a matrix that encases them and holds them in place. Saliva and food residue are a major part of what feeds it. It is what you are smelling when standing water starts to turn, and usually what a cat is reacting to when it walks over, sniffs once and turns away. The cat isn't off water. It's off that water.

And our answer didn't come from the pet industry —

it came from the aquarium.

Fish keepers met this problem decades ago. Circulate water and a film forms; let the film settle and the water turns. Their answer was not to clean more often. It was to keep the water moving through ultraviolet light — UVC clarifiers have been standard in aquarium and pond filtration for years.

Almost no pet fountain is built this way, because the lamp draws power and adds cost. Mattte is built to the aquarium standard: 18 hours of UVC a day, three hours on, one hour off, right through the day and the night. Biofilm needs a stretch of undisturbed time to take hold. That is the stretch we withhold.

01
Nothing to scrub
Cleaning goes from working at it with your fingertips to a rinse under the faucet.
02
No stale odor
Biofilm is where that smell comes from. Without it, the water is just water.
03
The cat comes back to it
Cats read water by smell before they drink. Clean water is worth the walk across the room.

The key difference

18 hrs/day

3 hours on, 1 hour off — around the clock.

18 hours running daily · 6 hours resting

UVC only sterilizes while it's on — so daily runtime is everything. To save power, most cordless fountains skip UVC entirely; the few that include it run for about an hour. Even corded models max out at 8 hours a day.

Mattte runs on a 3-hours-on, 1-hour-off rhythm around the clock — at least 18 hours of UVC a day. It's the biggest difference between Mattte and everything else, and the reason biofilm never gets a foothold.

Zero dead corners.

Bacteria collect wherever parts meet — snap-fit joints, the filter tray, the tank. The hardest spot is the tank's 90° base corner, a seam no brush can fully reach.

Mattte's tank base is one continuous curve, built for a single purpose: to be cleaned completely. The whole unit comes apart in three seconds.

No silicone — by design.

Almost every fountain routes water through silicone tubing — hidden or exposed. Silicone looks smooth, but under a microscope its surface is full of micro-pores: a perfect place for biofilm to take hold and grow.

We removed every silicone part and replaced it with food-grade PP — non-porous, smooth at any magnification. No pores means nothing for bacteria to grip, and nothing to grow on.

Mattte's four-layer filter media — sponge, filter cotton, and a quartered activated-carbon-and-resin disc
4

Four layers of filtration.

Coarse sponge and fine filter cotton catch hair and debris first. Next, activated carbon and softening resin alternate in a quartered disc — absorbing residual chlorine, odor, and impurities while softening the water.

Your pet's kidneys are more sensitive than you'd think — cats especially. Extra sodium, taken in daily, is an invisible burden. Most filters on the market don't say so, but they often use a sodium-form (Na⁺) resin that adds sodium to the water. Water soft enough for humans isn't automatically right for a cat, every day.

So we chose a formula that adds no sodium — hydrogen-form (H⁺) resin from the UK brand Purolite, certified to NSF/ANSI-61 for drinking water safety in the US. One less thing for your pet's kidneys to carry.

A quick note on how it works: standard softening resin is sodium-form (Na⁺) — it releases sodium ions to displace calcium and magnesium, softening the water while adding sodium to it. Weakly-acidic hydrogen-form (H⁺) resin releases hydrogen ions instead (which become CO₂), never putting sodium into the water. That's the mechanism behind "adds no sodium."

Design

Just enough presence.

Most pet fountains end up hidden in a corner. This one stays out in the open — a ceramic-coated stainless top plate, matte lines, a single color throughout. On the living room floor it reads like something the room already had, and it still looks right months later.

A double-walled tank and ceramic-shaft pump keep it steady at 30 decibels — about as quiet as a whisper, safe for the bedroom.

FAQ.

It is the slippery layer you feel when you wash out a water bowl. Bacteria settle on a wet surface and secrete a sticky substance that encases them; that layer is biofilm. It makes them far harder to rinse away, and it is the main reason water left standing starts to smell. It needs a continuous, undisturbed stretch of time to establish itself, so the answer is not to scrub harder but to deny it that quiet stretch — Mattte does three things at once: 18 hours of UVC a day, no silicone micropores for it to grip, and no 90-degree corners in the base of the tank that a brush cannot reach.

UVC light only sterilizes while it's on. A fountain that runs UVC for just 1 hour a day leaves the water unprotected for the other 23. Mattte's 3-hours-on, 1-hour-off cycle runs at least 18 hours a day, so bacteria and biofilm never get a long enough stretch to take hold.

With 18 hours of daily UVC and a zero-dead-corner interior, it stays far cleaner than a traditional fountain. A quick weekly rinse plus a deeper clean every 2–4 weeks is plenty — it takes apart in three seconds and just minutes to clean.

About once a month. Every unit ships with a filter already installed, plus a free 6-month filter set (6 pcs, worth S$27) — so your first six months are covered. Swapping one takes seconds — no tools needed.

One filter, four layers: coarse sponge and fine filter cotton catch hair and sediment first, then a disc alternating activated carbon with softening resin from the UK brand Purolite removes residual chlorine, odor, and impurities while softening the water. Standard softening resin is sodium-form (Na⁺) and adds sodium as it softens; ours is a weakly-acidic hydrogen-form (H⁺) resin that releases hydrogen ions instead — no sodium added to the water. The resin is certified to NSF/ANSI-61 for drinking water safety in the US, so it's one less burden on your pet's kidneys.

Yes. The UVC-LED is fully sealed inside the underwater motor module, so your pet never comes into contact with it — it sterilizes the water flowing through the internal channel, not the surface of the bowl.

No. It runs at about 30 decibels — about as quiet as a whisper — thanks to a sound-dampening double-walled tank and a low-friction ceramic-shaft pump. Many owners keep it right in the bedroom.

The box includes a USB-A to USB-C cable, but no power adapter. Any standard 5V charger works — a typical 5V/1A or 5V/2A phone charger is ideal. Please avoid fast-charging adapters (PD, QC, GaN): this is a low-voltage device (5V/500mA), and fast charging may prevent it from starting. If you need a replacement cable, use USB-A to USB-C — not C-to-C.

Yes — the pump, base tray, and filter are all available separately, so a single worn part doesn't mean replacing the whole fountain.
